Mongolian beef (with hoisin sauce)

Some of the best meals are also the simplest. This Asian-inspired ground beef bowl comes together in just 20 minutes, making it the perfect recipe for busy weeknights when you want something wholesome, satisfying, and bursting with flavor—without spending hours in the kitchen.

Tender ground beef is cooked with fragrant garlic and ginger, then coated in a rich, savory-sweet sauce, every bite delivers the perfect balance of umami, sweetness, and a hint of warmth. Pair it with fluffy rice and vibrant vegetables like broccoli or asparagus, and you have a complete meal the whole family will love.

One of the reasons this recipe is such a staple is its versatility. While ground beef creates a rich and satisfying dish, you can easily substitute ground turkey, chicken, lamb, or bison depending on your preference. It also stores beautifully, making it an excellent meal-prep option for lunches or dinners throughout the week.

Why Beef Can Be a Great Choice for Women's Health? For many women—especially those over 40—getting enough high-quality protein is essential for maintaining muscle, supporting metabolism, and promoting healthy aging. Beef is one of the most nutrient-dense protein sources available, providing all nine essential amino acids needed to build and repair muscle.

Beyond protein, beef is naturally rich in several nutrients that are particularly important for women:

  • Highly bioavailable iron, which helps support healthy oxygen transport and may be especially valuable for women who are menstruating or who have low iron stores.

  • Vitamin B12, essential for energy production, nervous system function, and red blood cell formation.

  • Zinc, which supports immune health, wound healing, and healthy skin.

  • Selenium, an important mineral that contributes to antioxidant defenses and normal thyroid function.

  • Choline, a nutrient involved in brain health and liver function.

  • Creatine, a naturally occurring compound found almost exclusively in animal foods that supports muscle performance and strength.

A Dinner You'll Make Again and Again - This recipe proves that healthy meals don't have to be complicated. With just a handful of pantry ingredients and one skillet, you can create a restaurant-worthy dinner in less than 30 minutes.

Serve it over steamed brown rice, cauliflower rice, or even roasted sweet potatoes. Add a side of broccoli, asparagus, bok choy, green beans, or snap peas for extra color, fiber, and nutrients. Change it up! It's the kind of recipe you'll find yourself coming back to whenever you need something fast, comforting, and deeply satisfying.

RECIPE

Ingredients

Beef

  • 900 g ground beef (or your preferred ground meat)

Sauce

  • 50 ml gluten-free soy sauce

  • 5 Tbsp gluten-free hoisin sauce (store-bought or homemade, my recipe here)

  • 50 ml date syrup (or your preferred liquid sweetener)

  • 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper

Aromatics

  • 50 g green onions, thinly sliced

  • 1 Tbsp garlic, finely minced

  • 1 Tbsp ginger paste

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. No oil is needed, as the ground beef will release enough fat during cooking.

  2. Add the ground beef, garlic, and ginger. Break the meat apart with a spatula and cook for about 10 minutes, until browned and fully cooked.

  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, date syrup, and black pepper.

  4. Pour the sauce over the cooked beef and stir well to coat evenly. Simmer for 5 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly and the flavors to meld.

  5. Stir in the green onions and cook for 30 seconds, just until softened. Remove from the heat.

  6. Serve over steamed rice with your favorite vegetables, such as broccoli, asparagus and broccoli.
