Za’atar spice mix

Za'atar is a Middle Eastern spice blend made from a combination of dried herbs, sesame seeds, sumac, and salt. It is widely used in Levantine cuisine, particularly in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Palestine. Za'atar is not only flavorful but also packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, making it both a culinary and medicinal ingredient.

As every spice mix it has regional variations, sometimes may include fennel. You can always make your own mix.

Za’atar is used for hummus, musabaha, falafel, and other Middle Eastern dishes. Check out some of my recipes.

Recipe

Ingredients

3 Tbsp dried thyme

1/4 cup roasted sesame seeds

3 Tbsp coriander powder

2 Tbsp cumin powder

2 Tbsp sumac powder

1 Tbsp dried oregano

1 Tbsp dried marjoram

1 tsp pink Himalayan salt

Instructions

  • Mix all the ingredients into a mixing bowl. If you want a finer texture you can use a spice grinder;

  • Place the spice mix into an air-tight container in your cupboard;

  • Use it as a meat rub, on your veggies, on roasted nuts, or make za’atar oil or flavor your salads.

Enjoy!
