Sumac hummus

Hummus is a delicious spread or dip made from chickpeas, tahini, lemon, and spices. Different countries have variations of bean spreads, for example, in Romania, we have fasole batuta, a delicious spread made of white beans, veggies, and spices. 

Hummus it’s commonly eaten in the Middle East and the Mediterranean region, but is one of those food staples you can find in every grocery store around the world.

You can find good store-bought versions at the grocery store, but I just wanted to share how easy it is to make your own hummus at home, skipping the plastic packaging, inflammatory oils, and preservatives. 

If you are wondering what sumac is, it is a tangy, smoky, earthy, and slightly sour essential spice used in Middle Eastern cooking. It has a deep red hue and fruity, citrusy flavor, and it is the perfect way to add acidity and color to your meals. 

If sumac isn't available, you can use other spices like za'atar or smoked paprika. 

RECIPE

Ingredients

2 cups boiled chickpeas

2 tsps sumac powder

1 tsp cumin powder

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp salt

3 Tbsps tahini

2 Tbsp lemon juice

1/2 cup olive oil

1 cup water

Instructions

  • Prep and cook your chickpeas or used canned chickpeas;

  • Blend the chickpeas and all the other ingredients in a high-speed blender until smooth;

  • Transfer the hummus into a bowl;

  • Add some olive oil and sumac on top;

  • Eat with baby carrots or your veggie of choice.
